Which creative industry am I interested in?

I am interested in everything.

  • Film-making.
  • Editing.
  • Sound/Music.
  • Camerawork .
  • Photography and more

How Competitive is it?

It is very competitive. One of the reasons is because of the ability to do set tasks as fast as you can but to the best of your ability as well as being very creative in the set task.

Another reason is experience. In the Creative Media Industry when people are employee, they are employed because they have quite a lot of experience, this is because companies don’t want to waste time on set or in a production. On the other hand, there are some companies like the BBC who employ people who don’t have much experience so that they can be trained the way the company wants.

There are so many good roles and companies in the Creative Industry but limited amount of space. Everybody wants the same roles; the main roles as well as working at the best companies involved in the Creative Industry such as Pinewood Studio, Elmstree etc. So, it is hard to get a job or work experience you need in order to excel.

In spite of everybody wanting the same job, nowadays most people don’t need a company to make films so it is open to anyone and everyone, all you would need to do is buy your own equipment and get a few friends to help out. In addition to that, many people are making amazing 5-10 minutes so it is cheaper and more practical.

That is why networking is also important in the Creative Industry. In the Creative Industry you need to find people who are as determined as you are. This is beneficial in the creative industry because you will get a lot done that is amazing in a short space of time. Furthermore, you might meet someone who knows someone else that may offer you a job, opening a lot of doors. plus, most of the work is freelance so you will have some money to survive on. In addition, it is always good to socialise with other people, you find something about yourself that you didn’t you before. People may influence/inspire you.

Most people in the Creativity Media Industry are willing to learn new skills which will help them better at what they want to do and there are always new things to learn as the years go by.

Finally, the advance of technology makes the Creative Industry more competitive. Every 6 months to a year a bunch of new cameras/ camcorders are being invented. A few decades ago people on tapes now we have SD Cards, so you have to learn about a completely new camera that is invented that you’ve never seen before.

How is work judged and presented in creative media?

Work is judged based on quality, creativity, imagination, effort put in the work, concept etc.

When work is shown in the creativity media industry one of the aspects that is judged is the concept. Concept is really important. You could have a good film with good shots, nice piece of scenery however, if the concept is boring or bad then no one would watch or you will receive bad critics. Whereas if the concept is amazing but the quality is okay to bad, people will still watch it because of the fact it is engaging. That being said it is always good to have nice quality footage for a film because it is beneficial. Quality is judged in everything when it comes to the creative media industry such as script, acting etc.

Another aspect that is judged in creative media is Originality. It’s quite difficult to make original films because most concepts have already been don however, it is possible. Even when people use old tales, recreating them it could still be original, but only if you have the vision and you have an idea how. For example, Alice in Wonderland directed by Tim Burton. He used his own style when shooting the movie, that is why he is an author and that is why the movie was phenomenal in my opinion along with screenwriter Linda Woolverton. So, originality and having your own style is important in the Creative Industry. Ultimately, many individuals making fantastic short films, showing originality rather making an 1 to 2 hour films.

Work in Creative Media is judged through Competitions & Film Festivals. Competitions and Film festivals such as the Edinburgh Film Festival, the Reed Short Film Competition the British Urban Film Festival (BUFF),the Sundance Film Competition etc. These festivals and competitions each have a different set of rules that you have to follow, each judged differently.

There are a variety of sources that work can be showcased on in the Creative Industry, for example, Youtube. Youtube is the biggest resource website when presenting work in Creative Media, this is due to the amount of people who use Youtube around the world. Work is easily accessible to others, also there are other websites that are popular and easy to use and spread your work like Vimeo,Facebook,Instagram etc.

Additionally, creating your own websites is another way to present work that is done, inventing a portfolio for yourself. Also, you can sell DVDs to strangers or friend and friends. On top of that, you could give a DVD to your employer or client to showcase who you are and the potential you have. This would most likely be done using a showreel, it will also show how much experience you have. The showreel can be shown through any of the resources I have mentioned and more.

What do other companies do for idents?

They come up with numerous ideas, doing experiments, watching previous idents to get inspiration etc.

I think that most companies have a creative department who have meetings to discuss a new ways on how they will display their brand. They have to come up with a Ident that will be appealing and will become popular with their target audience. Then they would have to see how much it would cost to produce once they have chosen an idea, once that is done they have to distribute it.

Companies have a person or group of people who approve projects that need to be shown, so something the creative department have to show those people. In some occasions, the people higher up may not accept it so, the creative department would have to start again or adjust it. On the other hand, that is not the case, the creative department have a lot of freedom to do what they want. It is all a process. A lot of companies do their new ident months in advance so that it is perfect to distribute such as doing a lot of experiment.

Drama Network

I like this ident from the Drama Network because it shows you what it is produced which is Drama using scenery and actor and dramatic atmospheric sound. The camera POV of the woman is really nice because it keeps you engaged, you feel as if you are behind her for real. Also, I like how their logo is simple but effective along with the way that it appears. I think that they used After Effect/ Premiere pro the do the advert and maybe Illustrator to do the logo. The concept was great.

Spike

I really enjoyed watching the ident for Spike because of the way the couple run and turn into a Hawk. I think that it is very creative, I like the design and the colours used in this ident because it has that WOW factor about it. Using three screens to show different things. I think that the concept is clever. It looks like they used After Effect, maybe green I’m not sure however, overall I like it a lot and hopefully watching it will help me with my Ident.

Dreamworks

The Classic Dreamworks animation Ident I like how it makes you feel as if you are in a dream which is what the brand is about, it is straight to the point and gives what it’s brand name is about which I think makes it so good and popular. Also, the music that is played it takes that dream aspect to the next level and optimistically I will have a ident that is catchy and everybody remembers.

What do other similar students do for indents?

SyFy Channel Ident Student Ident

I really enjoy watching this Ident, the reason why I like it a lot is because it is funny. The way they use personification as the robot developed brain freeze, I found it very interesting and I like ident that make you want to watch it over and over again. What’s more is that I like the look of it; the pink/yellow horizon, the design of both robots are cool along with the SyFy logo. I think that it conveyed what it was supposed to convey which was the Summer Sunday(Sundae), I love the play words as well. Everything was thought out very well and I really wish my ident meets that kind of standard.

SubTV Student Ident

What I really like about this Ident is that everything the picture changes a different type of background music is played. It makes you think about what the channel has to offer and is there a variety of content. The only thing I don’t like is the ruffles or lines at the side. After watching this Ident I kind of have a bit of idea about what mine is going to consist of.

RP Student Ident

I don’t really like this ident, I think it is because the quality of the blood and the font used in this ident. Even though, I did not like this ident I think that it has helped because it has shown me what I don’t so that when it comes to doing my ident I know what I won’t be adding.
