Primary Research on Revenge

  • definition

For the theme “revenge”, I have viewed five dictionary definitions from three websites to explain the meaning of this concept.

http://www.definitions. net/definitions/revenge

The Webster dictionary says that the definition of revenge is to inflict harm in return for an injury, insult. To exact satisfaction for, under a sense of injury; to avenge; followed either by the wrong received or by the person or living wronged, as the object or by the reciprocal pronoun as a direct object and a preposition before the wrong done or wrong doer.

With the Freebase dictionary, revenge is a harmful action against a person or group in response to a grievance, be it real or perceived. It is also called payback, retribution, retaliation or vengeance. it may be characterised as a form of justice, an altruistic action, which enforces a societal or moral injustice aside from the legal system. Frances Bacon described it as a kind of wild justice.

With Wiktionary, revenge is any form of personal retaliatory action against an individual, institution or group for some perceived harm or injustice.

http://www.learnersdictionary.com/definition/revenge

The Learner’s Dictionary shows that revenge is the act of doing something to hurt someone because that person did something that hurt you. In addition, revenge can be an act of defeating an opponent who has defeated you in the past.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.phpitem=revenge

This dictionary defines revenge whereby an inflicting punishment in return for injury or insult. Basically, it is to get back at someone for something they did to you. Basically, revenge is a lot like Gazpacho. It is a dish served cold.

When analysing this theme, the common elements that the academics have included within them is that for revenge to occur, an injustice has to be performed on a person. For example, in Kill Bill, Vol 1, The Bride (Uma Thurman) who is an expert assassin that is gunned down with her attendee at her wedding by her employer, Bill and his associates. She is left for dead. However, she is rescued and ends up in a four year coma where her baby has been extracted from her womb. Once, she awakes from the coma, she decides to kill her intended targets and her ex-lover and retrieve her child Melanie Harrhouse (Thea Rose).

Another common element is that the punishment is always outside the societal or moral principle of the legal system. For example, in Kill Bill Vol 1 & 2, The Bride kills her associates in the private arena of her opponents and uses a weapon where the conclusion, (death) is fast and final.

Another common element is that there is always a form of retaliation. For example, in Django, his slave owner sells him and his wife separately, not before the overseers brand them with “r” stating they were runaways and whip his wife. Once Django is freed by Schultz (bounty hunter) to assist him to recognise the overseers (Brittle brothers) so he can obtain a bounty placed upon their lives. Once recognised, Schultz gives Django the opportunity to get his revenge by shooting them from their horses. Another common element, all these definitions include words that give an impression of violence like inflict harm, doing harm to someone, insult and commit a harmful act. Usually, when these words are introduced into a film visually, it can lead to bloodshed.

  • revenge in films

Personal Revenge

Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet had aspects of Revenge when Romeo was angry at the fact that Tibolt Capulet had killed his Best Friend Mercutio by tracking him down and shooting him.

This links to the revenge on a personal level, similar to the definitions of revenge that I have previously looked up. It shows that revenge causes banishment so perhaps I could an add consequence in my film whether it’s death or imprisonment.

Batman – Dark Knight Rises (Talia al Ghul)

Talia al Ghul wanted revenge on batman (Bruce Wayne) for his involvement in the death of her father Ra’s al Ghul in the first movie batman begins so she teamed up with Bane who was not only to take over Gotham but broke the batman spirit and his back, as to prove that batmans drive and motivation, was too weak to overcome such darkness without becoming the darkness himself.

After watching the Dark Knight Rises I am leaning towards doing a revenge story that is personal to the character, for instance, she gets revenge on Bruce Wayne because of her father, I think that is a valid reason to her would kill him so maybe I could work with that. It

Revolutionary Revenge

Hunger Games Franchise

The Hunger games is an annual event due to the fact, that when civilisation came together under one nation they called it Panama with the wealthiest living inside the capital while the poorer loved on the outskirt. After the citizens living on the outside rose up in rebellion and decided to fight against the capital. However, the rebels lost and ultimately surrendered while district 13 was bombed as punishment for this act of defiance the 12 district had to sacrifice 1 boy and 1 girl as to fight to the death against other children.

There is also revenge because of defiance, I learnt that defiance can also trigger revenge which links to the urban dictionary’s definition of revenge. This is one way that I could portray revenge in my film and I understand more about revenge and where revenge comes from along with how it is taken into action.

Katniss and Peeta were from the same district as the hunger games started she found out that he had joined the couriers which were the capitals favourites who had chased her up the tree this act of betrayal forced her to drop a hive of tracker jackers.

Katniss was a citizen of the nation of Panama where she lived in district 12 and volunteered for the hunger games where she watched her close friend be killed this caused her to ignite a rebellion against the capital and President Snow.

After watching the hunger games it has can be risen by an emotional attachment to someone. The hunger games is a great concept and I could use this in my project, maybe my characters love one gets murdered and then he or she goes to find the person who murdered them. However, this concept has been used throughout the film industry a lot, I want to be more original when it comes to my idea.

Conclusion

I have learnt that revenge in film evokes several emotions from the audience such as sadness, hope and sympathy towards the victim who is in the film and hatred, anger and disgust towards the protagonist leading to a good film as they are both able to perform exceptionally allowing them to portray certain emotions from the audience.

  • revenge in drama (plays)

Othello

Othello shows signs of revenge, when Othello stabs Iago who he thought was a loyal and trusted friend for telling him lies about his wife and planting false evidence like her dropped handkerchief in the lodging of a woman who which she spends most her time and conversations making him distrust her and then eventually persuading him to strangle her while she was sleeping.

Iago lies about his wife and planting false evidence like her dropped handkerchief in the lodging of a woman who which she spends most her time and conversations making him distrust her and then eventually persuading him to strangle her while she was sleeping.

Revenge in plays allows the audience t to feel conflicting emotions such as whether a person should be allowed to take justice into his own hands and if there is no justice to feel frustration and desire for justice against the oppressors. This is related to the definition from freebase dictionary.

Hamlet

http://www.academia.edu/4052380/HAMLET_AS_A_REVENGE_PLAY/ Academia © 2016/ Mrs Poonam Valera uploaded

Researching revenge in literature, Shakespeare’s Hamlet seems to cover this theme. According to Valera, 2016, there are specific characteristics that the dramatist has to include to portray a revenge play like some kind of murder or crime has to be committed, for example, in Hamlet, he has to avenge the premature death of his father by his brother. Hamlet discovers this tragedy by his father’s ghost talking to him and by the playwright getting an actor to look into the ghost’s eyes to see the truth of his accusation. Another element is the fact that the avenger always knows who to avenge or is informed by others as to whom to execute their anger upon. For example in Hamlet, his father’s ghost recognised and named his killer, so Hamlet was in no doubt who to kill.

With Revenge in literature, it seems that bloodshed, betrayal, treachery and struggle seem to be connected to this theme. In a revenge play, the revenge has a devastating impact upon the avenger and the avenged and it seems to happen at the end of the play. Finally, under the theme “revenge” there is an inner torment for the avenger as to whether avenge the death of a loved one or not.

Conclusion

Shakespeare is very inspiring when it comes down to love and revenge, these plays have helped me establish different aspects and perspectives of revenge. It is great and it has helped me immense because it has cleared up some things on revenge for me and it makes me think of questions to ask myself when developing my idea.

  • quotes on revenge

Revenge is a dish best-served cold which refers to

This quote refers to revenge is served

How the tables have turned which means

The shoe is on the other foot which refers to

Karma is a bitch which refers to

Quotes used in revenge terms gives the audience the idea that a character has just delivered in their mind the revenge they have strived for. I think these quotes evoke the feeling of satisfaction and joy in the character and I think that it would be beneficial towards the progression of my film. I think that it allows the character to move on valiantly and take what is owed which is revenge.

  • biblical revenge

Biblical revenge tries to portray that everybody given the circumstances and situation can be vengeful and it shows you the repercussions of their wrong doings.

Genesis 34:25 this tells a story of how Jacob and his sons decided to avenge the rape of Dinah

Judges 15:7, 16:28:30

This story implements revenge as Sampson avenged the death of his wife and as the philistines gouged out his eyes, he asked god to give him the strength so to pull down two pillars which when given to him allowed him to kill many of them before being killed himself.

I think that this a great biblical story because it shows revenge in a heroic way like Superman or Hercules. I think that this concept would be suitable if I decide to make a superheroes movie for my final major project. I like the verse of bible and it was beneficial to read.

Samual 13:23:29

This is about Amnon who is the Brother of Taman. He desired her son he forced himself upon her. Her other sibling Absalom looked after her and thereafter hated his older brother for what he had done. Their father David would not punish Amnon as he was the first born so therefore, Absalom’s servants killed him instead.

I think that this biblical story is deep, however, it is based on revenge and understand in some cases authoritative figures do not serve justice so you have to deal with the situation your own way and that may not be right in some people’s eyes it may be justifiable in other people eyes. It raises some question about my own ideas, for example, would people like or dislike the characters I will develop.

  • music

Meek Mill – Energy

Energy is a freestyle talking about how everybody wanted to be his friend but now everyone is against. The premise of the video and the song portray revenge and hatred towards his enemies. I like the camera techniques in that video such as tracking shots, close-ups and I like how there are loads of people behind him. I like the concept and if I decide to a film where the guy does girl and then years later he could but doesn’t like What happens in Vegas starring Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz. It has helped me because I know what I don’t want as my final major project.

…………………………………………

Mike Jones – Back then

This song portrays the type of revenge where the love interests rejected him back in the day and now he has become success and women are chasing him.

………………………………………………

Music is used to express what individual is feeling, there are a lot of revenge-themed music that have been played over the years, more recent than before. They portray these songs through music videos, in a cinematic way which excite and keep the audience interested and on the edge of their seat.

Justin Timberlake cry a river

Justin feels no sympathy or empathy for the girl because he cheated her I like how close he was to the audience I think it engages us and it makes me feel that I am there. Also, it evokes a sympathetic feeling towards Justin Timberlake he gets cheated on. I like the characteristics because it’s about someone getting revenge by becoming successful and now she is  lonely more than successful but he doesnt care.

  • revenge for love

Daredevil revenge is shown in which it shows a character named The Punisher decides to eliminate all the criminal aspect of Hell’s Kitchen by killing all the gang mobster, this is due to the fact that he witnessed his wife, son and daughter shot down in front of him.

John wick is another aspect of revenge as a group of thugs break into his home beat him senseless and then kill his dog which, was a final loving gift from his recently departed wife. Therefore, he goes on a mission to kill the people who were responsible.

The punisher portrays what happens when people are betrayed and they are in love, sometimes their emotions outweigh their rationality to thinking clearly thereby making them commit unspeakable actions which would cause the individual to regret their actions later on. This could be implemented into my project as this shows me in depth how people cope with love.

“I thought you loved me! You was my Baby”

https://www.360nobs.com/2014/09/man-stabs-girlfriend-to-death-for-using-another-man-as-her-mcm/

The cinnamon apple clip went viral on youtube and people thought it was hilarious, however, the repercussions of her betrayal lead her to her death along with embarrassment and heartbreak to the guy who killed her and is going to jail. I think that there is no valid reason for killing someone, on their hand, this has helped me think about a deep concept that could be similar to this situation which is good for me. I think that if she didn’t cheat then he wouldn’t have killed her, I think this is an interesting story even though this is a tragedy story, I think it as a concept.

-Minta Adiddo killed his wife by stabbing her 15 times then running her over with his car because he thought she was having an affair with a neighbour. Days leading up to the event after finding out through DNA test that his children did not belong to him. The father was said to be angry as she followed him from site to site harassing him for child support knowing that the children were not his.

http://www.urbanleak.com/man-cuts-wife-head-off-after-finding-out-her-6-kids-were-not-his-through-dna-tests/

After reading this article I understand why he kills the mother of his non-biological children, revenge was done out of anger, annoyance and betrayal. There was no reason to kill her, personally I would have dumped her, however, this article has made me more interesting in the concept and idea of revenge and it will assist me when I develop my idea for this project.

Conclusion

I have … that there are many ways that revenge takes place and I think that this research has broadened my mind to the thought of revenge and how it is implemented and the reason behind it.
