What is Distribution?

Wikipedia the free encyclopedia. (n.d.). Retrieved April, 2015.

Film Distribution is the process of making a movie available for viewing, which is shown to an audience. For example, audiences in the theatre and audiences who are just listening.

How Film Distribution works

How film distribution works is all to do with professional film distributor for example, BBC, Channel 4 etc. Film distributors determine where and how to distribute your Film or TV programme to different companies and locations. In some cases, the film distributor may set a release date for your film/ TV show, but not always. This is because you may be starting out and the film distributor knows when the best times to release the film.

The Ways In Which Films Are Distributed:

Films are distributed through Movie Theatres e.g. Cinemas, IMAX along with Television and home viewings such as DVD’s & Blu-ray. In addition to that, Radio Stations and Online Downloads as well as events such as Showcases or Film Festivals etc.

Other ways to let everyone know about your film/TV show is by doing film promotion, this involves posters that are on buses, trains, in colleges etc.

Format distributed

The format that I am going to be using to export my TV Pilot is an MP4 format.

In my cases these are ways in which my TV Pilot is going to be seen:

  • Youtube

Youtube is the main source (host) in which I will be presenting my TV Pilot. The reason why I have chosen to upload it to Youtube is so I can put it onto my blog as well as send a majority of people the link to my pilot.

  • Showcase

Mark Caffoor (the professional distributor) my tutor is presenting my work in an event/showcase because it is part of the brief as well as promoting my skills.

  • Informing People e.g. friends, family

I will distribute my TV Pilot through my words. Informing my family and friends that they should watch it.

  • Making Posters

If I have enough time, then I will make a poster for my TV Pilot because it will be beneficial to my project.

  • Making a short promo video

If I have enough time left, I will try an edit a short promo video showing the best bits of my final product, which will probably be 10 to 30 seconds. This would be beneficial because comment more.

  • DVD

If I think my TV Pilot is good enough, which it will be. I will burn it into a DVD to show people my hard work. The reason I am burning a DVD is so I can show my work to a numerous amount of people, family, friends etc. Also, as a memory to keep.

Hypothetical Future Goal

If I were to have my TV Pilot distributed professionally, I would have my Pilot on BBC One because there are no adverts shown so people would have their full attention. However, I have to think about if the channel will accept my type of TV show, taking that into consideration I would put my Pilot onto BBC Three or E4. The first episode to my 10 episodes series would start at 8:30pm because people are not as tired at that time and it would be shown every Wednesday.

Conclusion:

All of the information I have written down on this page is going to useful to me when distributing my film. Although, I am not getting any money in return for my episode, many people will see what I have produced making me feel like an Auteur, which is good.
