Shots

Establishing shot – To give context to a scene either at the start or the middle of a film/TV show, telling you about a scene/new scene without telling you.

This is an establishing shot in The Simpsons, giving the audience an overview of the place where Homer Simpson works, informing us that its a new scene.

Wide Shot – When a character or object takes up the whole frame, showing subject as well as the background. Everything gown in the frame at once.

This is an example of a wide shot because in the movie UP, the characters fill the screen with the ground showing and the background to set the scene. Showing the audience where they are.

Close Up – A shot that shows a certain subject or part that uses most of the frame, a shot that shows detail in a scene.

This is a close up of Selena Gomez in her video ‘the heart wants what it wants’, this close up shows her emotions, which is very effective because it connects with the audience.

Extreme close up – A shot that shows you a really detailed view of a person or a object.

This is an example of an extreme close up, which is shown in Meagan Trainor’s music video, extreme close up shots are usually focused on the lips or the eyes.

Over the shoulder – This is a shot that is filmed from behind a character who is looking at another character.

Point of view –  A point of view shot is a shot that is filmed from the character’s perspective.

Mid shot – A shot that is normally shot from the waist up, showing the subject in more detail, however, just enough that it make the audience feel that they are looking at the whole subject (character).

Pan Shot – A shot where the camera moves horizontally from left to right or from right to left in a continuous motion

Long Shot – A shot that shows the entire person from head to toe, which is like a wide shot
